Wondering why your hair is thinner after recovering from COVID-19?
You’re not alone.
According to a recent study published by the International Journal of Dermatology, approximately 46-49% of people surveyed experienced some form of hair loss after suffering long covid.
But it’s not just long covid sufferers, even those who’ve had mild or moderate cases of COVID are still seeing hair loss too.
Infectious Disease Epidemiologist, Dr. Mo Assoum, explains that one of the side-effects of COVID is hair loss. Whether it’s a gradual reduction in overall hair density or seeing your hair fall out in clumps, the feelings associated with unexplained hair loss can be overwhelming.
While there are many reasons your body is responding this way, there are a few medical explanations associated with hair loss post COVID-19.
The American Academy of Dermatology explains that temporary hair loss, or hair shedding, is quite common after fever or illness.
It happens when more hairs than normal enter the shedding (telogen) phase of the hair growth life cycle at the same time. A fever or illness can force more hairs into the shedding phase.
On average, people shed about 100 to 150 hairs a day, but when an individual experiences a stressful event, such as COVID-19 infection, our bodies can prematurely shift a greater than normal proportion of growing anagen hairs into a resting telogen state.
The result? Up to 5 times more hair is resting and shedding, causing more hair to fall out.
Hair shedding is known as telogen effluvium. In most cases, it normally resolves itself within 3-6 months, but can take up to 2 years depending on how long your hair is and how quickly it grows. And, even after shedding has stopped you might notice your hair isn't as thick as it once was when it starts to grow back.
The BHB Collection of toppers are perfect for women experiencing thinning hair or partial hair loss on the crown. They’re easy to place on the head, incredibly comfortable and offer an immediate solution that doesn’t damage your regrowth like extensions do.

Did you know in Australia there are some amazing grants available for kids to receive funding for wigs?
At The Beautiful Hair Boutique we work closely with The Australia Alopecia Foundation and Variety The Children's Charity who both very generously offer grants for our human hair wigs.
The cost of good human hair wigs can be out of reach for some families so we have teamed up with these two incredible charities to help you have access to some funding.
Variety The Children's Charity Wig Grants
Variety – The Children’s Charity provides wigs to kids who have lost their hair due to Alopecia or another medical condition such as cancer. Variety understand that for a child, losing their hair can have profound psychological effects, especially during childhood and teen adolescent years.
Variety will fund up to $6,000 for a real human hair wig, to approved applicants every 2 years. Applicants must be 18 years and under to be eligible for this incredible grant. Applications are open all year round. You will need to contact your local state Variety office to apply.
To apply for the Variety grants and for application guidelines visit: https://www.variety.org.au/wigs
Australia Alopecia Arearta Foundation - Wigs for Kids Grant
The Australian Alopecia Areata Foundation has wig grants available for children with any form of Alopecia Areata. The AAAF Wigs for Kids program is a once-off $400 grant awarded to a child with any form of Alopecia Areata aged 18 and under. The program provides initial funding towards the cost of the wig or wig products.
"AAAF believes that whether to wear a wig or not is a personal choice. As government assistance and Medicare / Private Health Care rebates are limited and vary across states, AAAF established the Wig for Kids Program to ensure that children wanting to wear a wig get the information, service and support needed".
For more information on how to apply for the AAAF $400 wig grant visit:
https://aaaf.org.au/wigs-for-kids
At The Beautiful Hair Boutique we are here to help! We will happily help guide you through the application process for both the Variety wig grant and AAAF wigs for kids one off grant. Keep in mind the application funding can take a little time to come through, so if you did need something quickly, we would advise reaching out as soon as your child is ready to make the journey into wigs.

Step one:
Take all the knots out first! Lay your wig down flat and detangle the hair with love using a soft bristle brush, starting with the nape and ends and working your way up. NB: Make sure you brush your wig daily to ensure knots don't build up at the nape or throughout the wig.
Step two:
Rinse the hair roots to ends in warm running water. This can be done in a sink or in the shower so long as the water is clean and running to make sure all shampoo and conditioner is properly rinsed throughout.
Step three:
Shampoo the hair twice and then condition the wig. We recommend using only salon quality products on your wig or topper. Unlike hair that grows out of the head it doesn't replenish itself so its important to use a shampoo that is hydrating and a conditioner that will continue to treat the hair. At The Beautiful Hair Boutique we maintain all of our wigs in store and clients wigs with the shampoo and conditioner range from The Earthy Minimalist.
Available to purchase in-store or online - click here.
Step four:
Towel dry (gently please!). After you wash your topper or wig we recommend to gently pat it dry with a towel to remove any excess water.
Step five:
Leave the hair to dry a little before you start to brush, this give the root knots time to dry and avoid putting extra pressure on these delicate hairs whilst wet.
When brushing, be sure to use a soft bristle brush. We recommend the Wet Brush as the bristles are soft and flexible to use on the wigs and toppers. Available to purchase in store or online - click here
Step six:
Allow the hair to dry to approximately 80-90% before styling with a hair dryer. If using heat tools, we recommend using a salon quality heat protectant prior to heating the hair.
If you would prefer to air dry your wig or topper, pop this on a wig stand, brush the hair back (so it doesn't fall forward on your face) and with the hair parted in the correct direction while it dries off completely and viola it's ready to wear!
If you are still feeling a little unsure on how to wash your new hair, or you would prefer to have your hair maintained by one of our wig professional stylists, book in for a wash, treatment and blow dry and we will happily take care of everything for you.
We offer full hair dressing services Monday - Saturday at The Beautiful Hair Boutique.
To book your wig or topper in for a treatment phone 0431 110 220 or email info@thebeautifulhairboutique.com

How would you cope if you lost your hair? For many women, their hair is an integral part of their identity and experiencing hair loss can impact severely on their self-esteem and their social engagement.
Sarah Christian has had alopecia since she was seven years old. It’s her hair loss journey that inspired her to create The Beautiful Hair Boutique, an incredible solution for women who have experienced hair loss through cancer and alopecia who have lost their faith in wigs.
And these aren’t just any wigs. They are couture for your coiffure.
“I have worn wigs that were very ordinary,” Sarah tells Mamamia. “When I lost my hair six years ago I kept buying wigs that kept knotting and matting and I made it a mission to find a wig to wear made with proper hair.”
In her quest to find beautiful hair, Sarah found European hair is the most effective in mimicking Caucasian hair.
“It’s silky and fine, and it felt the most like my real hair,” says Sarah, who went on to import the wigs into Australia and then have her team of stylists create contemporary customised colours and cuts.
In 2016, Sarah opened her flagship salon in Mosman, and is now based in Neutral Bay, and has an online store (doing consultations via Skype and email).
Knowing personally what it’s like to lose her hair, Sarah takes great pride in making sure her products are high quality and natural looking. Sarah wears her hair very long and very blonde. It’s sensational.
“My hair was what made me feel feminine. My clients going through chemo come in and say ‘I can cope with the treatment but I am struggling with losing my hair!’ My clients want to be able to go to work, or go out socially and not have people pity them,” Sarah explains.
“When you have a wig that sits naturally and looks like your real hair you don’t have to tell your story to anyone. You don’t have to be at a function and then be bothered by having to be in a conversation where people ask about your hair loss. In fact, when I am wearing my wig people generally say I have amazing hair, and I say ‘Thank you’!”
And Sarah does have amazing hair. Long blonde hair, auburn hair, brown hair. She has beautiful long lustrous locks that don’t matt or break. They are wigs that don’t look like wigs. In fact, they look better than most people’s actual hair.
“I am probably the biggest critic ever,” she adds. “I am so fussy about them! I wear really long hair so it has to be perfect. Wigs stand out if they are not right.”
Other reasons women who experience hair loss may avoid wigs is a belief that they are hot or uncomfortable. Not so with Sarah’s Beautiful Hair.
“I have a huge range of light density wigs,” she tells me. “Aussie women don’t want mountains of hair. They like their wigs to have heaps of ventilation. Some wigs can be pulled into a ponytail for exercise. We make sure they are really secure so they never fall off.”
While wigs can be bought online or instore and worn immediately, the most unique and wonderful experience that Sarah offers at the Beautiful Hair Boutique is a personal consultation with her team of stylists. Many women have been too embarrassed to go to a hairdresser, so now, with their new wig, or as Sarah calls it ‘a blank canvas’, they can work with the stylist to colour and cut their wig to suit them.
Hairpieces are a very individual thing - and Sarah says every wig should be personalised. She even offers travel grants for women living out of the Sydney area who want to come to her store.
"Women can order wigs online but I like to make sure their hair is right. We can use a photograph or do an online consult, and if they want to come from interstate we offer a $250 grant to help cover their costs to travel to our boutique in Sydney," she says.
This is an extraordinarily compassionate offer from a woman whose business isn’t just about selling beautiful hair, it’s about changing lives.
"I am 34. I never thought I would be doing this five years ago. But I believe everyone goes through a journey for a reason," she says.
"Some women worry that they are being vain wearing a wig. But it helps bring your confidence back. You see women go from having their head down to suddenly glowing. It’s beautiful."
If you have experienced hair loss, and you are ready to reclaim your mane with a private and very confidential consultation with the woman who has travelled the world to find you the most beautiful hair, then contact the fairy godmother of wigs, Sarah Christian.

So, your hair is falling out. Maybe it’s not as thick as it used to be and it’s breaking off in pieces, or you’re finding bald patches where they weren’t before?
The good news is....You're not alone!
If the first thought that enters your mind when you hear crown extensions is a toupee, ditch it and read on, because crown extensions and toppers are the next big thing in the hair extension industry.
Featured below is our gorgeous client Kate is wearing our 20" platinum blonde hair topper with custom shadow darker rooting, to allow a seamless transition from the crown topper to her own hair for the most natural look.
Crown toppers – also referred to as crown extensions, hair toppers or hair topettes – are hair pieces specifically designed for women suffering hair loss or thinning around the crown and top of their head.
Crown extensions help to cover the affected areas [from hair loss] and add volume to your natural hair, we blend your human hair topper to your very own hair to ensure the most natural look.
Like a full wig, crown toppers are made to recreate how a natural, full head of hair looks from the top, including a natural-looking part (which doesn’t have to be dead straight, because who actually manages to get their part straight anyway?!).
Crown toppers only mimic the ‘first layer’ of your natural hair, meaning unlike wigs, your real hair sits underneath and can be styled seamlessly with your topper to create a fuller look.
These hairpieces come in a wide range of colours, and can be cut, coloured and styled like natural hair. Wash it, straighten it, add beachy waves or wear it in a half-up messy bun – the options are endless.
Featured above is our 14" french top crown extension in a beautiful light brown balayage.
The thing no-one knows about female pattern baldness, hair loss or hair thinning is it’s so common. More than 55 percent of women will experience some degree of hair loss in their life. Except we keep it to ourselves. None of us like to talk about it – women aren’t allowed to get bald patches like men, right?
But women get hair loss, breakage and thinning too, and it carries an unjustified stigma and shame. We ask ourselves why our hair doesn’t look like the woman’s on the shampoo commercial or in the magazine, and if that makes us less feminine, less of a woman.
The answer is, it doesn’t. While there’s nothing wrong with having thinning hair or experiencing hair loss, there are options out there to help you feel comfortable and confident, if you want them.
One of these is crown extensions. The next big thing in hair extensions and we have you covered!
The BHB is your #1 destination for crown extensions and we can find you the right piece to blend perfectly with your own hair.
Why wear Crown Extensions - also known as Hair Toppers?

At The Beautiful Hair Boutique we offer complimentary hair topper consultations with one of our hair loss experts to help find you the perfect topper to match your natural hair and desired level of hair thickness, colour and style.

So you have taken the plunge and purchased your very own human hair wig, congratulations! Even though The Beautiful Hair Boutique has the highest quality human hair wigs available for women, it is still super important that you look after your new mane with a little TLC so it can stay luscious and beautiful for as long as possible.
Here are our top 10 tips to care for your hair!
1. Salon quality stuff only please! We strongly recommend using only salon quality hair products that have been specifically designed to hydrate and treat our beautiful human hair wigs. When you purchase a wig or hairpiece from The BHB we recommend you use V&M salon quality products as this is what we use on the hair to keep it looking luscious and strong.
2. Wash your wig like a professional - How? Follow these easy steps:
- Take all the knots out first! Lay your wig down flat and detangle the hair with love using a soft bristle brush.
- Rinse the hair roots to ends in luke warm running water. This can be done in a sink or in the shower
- Shampoo the hair twice and then condition the wig
- Towel dry (gently please!)
- Leave the hair to dry a little before you start to brush, this give the root knots time to dry
Viola your hair is clean!
3. Feeling the need to straighten or curl your wig? That's ok, but lets just make sure you are using the correct tools. Our wigs are made from 100% Virgin European hair and premium precoloured Remy Human hair so stay clear of any tools that are too heavy on the heat, as we would hate for you to damage the hair. We recommend only professional salon quality that will protect the hair.
4. Choose the right brush and make sure you brush the hair at the end of every day. We recommend a soft bristle brush, that is flexible and wont't put extra pressure on the hair or pull it from the roots.
5. Store your hair away safely when you aren't using it. Did you know our Human Hair Wigs have feelings too? So we need to make sure your hair is safely stored so they will hold her style and also help them live a little longer. After all doesn't everyone want to live a little longer?
6. Wash the hair maxium every 2 weeks! We strongly recommend you wash your new hair weekly or maxium 2 weeks if you do not wear it often. The hair needs to stay hydrated which washing it will do.
7. Clean or wipe the inside of your wig caps to help avoid the build up of oils from the scalp between washes.
8. Avoid scratching the cap and the top of your wig. It can be tempting to scratch the wig if you feel an itch. This can cause little patches of hair loss if done repeatedly in the same area, so if you do feel the need, try to scratch underneath the cap directly onto the scalp. If you are in public, take a quick bathroom break.
9. We know it can be fun to play with your new hair but try not to pull the hair too much. We want your piece to last as long as possible so please be gentle.
10. Show it a little extra love when needed! Our Aussie sun is strong so it can lighten and dry out the hair over a period of time. If you need us to give it a wig spa makeover for a beautiful refresh we would love to help bring your hair back to life!
Lastly ladies, enjoy your wigs! Let them become a part of you and love them like they are your own hair.

“Self confidence is the best outfit. Rock it, and own it!”
I have learnt over the years that confidence comes so much more from within and is less about physical appearance only. Once we knock over the superficial things, we are still the same person inside. Often people think their lives would change once they were just a little bit skinnier, landed that killer new job, change their hair or even buy a sexy new dress. But when it comes down to it, if we aren’t confident on the inside it is almost impossible for this to radiate on the outside. Energy attracts energy and if we are exuding confidence those around us will start to absorb our energy and feel the confidence..
If you feel like you are starting to lack self confidence, or have been feeling this way for a long time, try to start to take control of your life. Thankfully, a lack of self confidence isn’t genetic, it’s not something we are born with and stick with for life. It is something YOU can change, if YOU take the time to work on it. The bad news is, there is no quick fix. It is a gradual process, but there is no time like the present to take charge. The good news is, as you build confidence you will build success and no one can take this away from you!
Just remember to give yourself a pat on the back every once and awhile too!
Many women with hair loss as a result of cancer, alopecia, genetic hair thinning, female pattern hair loss or even women who don’t like the hair they were blessed with can feel their confidence slowly dwindling away. Our hair can be seen as a major part of who we are as women and it can define our femininity. But is our hair all we are made up of? Are we going to let this one thing hold us back from achieving our life goals? Let's try not to!
It is almost impossible to do achieve everything we set out to do in life when we have a lack of confidence or low self esteem hanging over our heads. So let's challenge ourselves to boost our confidence we all have it in us to rock our confidence outfits and remember you are amazing! And remember to remind yourself of this EVERY day so you can pursue your dreams and build up your confidence more and more each day!
By working on my confidence, it has allowed me to overcome my fears and finally pursue my dreams and you know what, the best part about pursuing my dreams, is I now get to help other women build their confidence. I love seeing women walk into the salon, timid, withdrawn and undoubtedly insecure. Once transformed with a beautiful new wig or hair topper they leave happy and I have have beauties literally bouncing out the door! This honestly, makes my day and brings the biggest smile to my face. It makes it all worth it.
When I first launched The Beautiful Hair Boutique I was VERY cautious about sharing my story, as I didn’t want to look like I was “tooting my own horn”. However, the response was overwhelming which ultimately has made it so worth it. Many women reached out as a result of reading my story that I soon realised my mission was accomplished, and I was going to help change people's lives.
I would like to share with you my ten top tips to help boost my confidence daily! I work in an industry where I am face to face with women (and children) with major confidence issues so I need to be feeling my best, to help my clients be their best too! Most of my clients have absolutely no hair on their heads.
10 Tips to help BOOST your self CONFIDENCE!
Pick a couple and see how you go, then try add a few more, or add some of your own.
Do I have bad days? Of course I do! This is all part of the journey. I need to ground myself and remember what I have achieved and switch myself back into that positive mindset. If I can’t, I’ll call someone who will. Don’t be afraid to show weakness and reach out to your bestie, mum, colleague or anyone who will help lift you back up.
“To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance” - Oscar Wilde
Hair loss will affect your confidence, but you can learn to live with it and you will overcome it and it ultimately this will give you the strength to also overcome challenges in other areas of your life. I honestly believe I am a stronger person because of it.
How do you overcome this to help others? Firstly, you have to completely accept yourself for who you are, love yourself and be open to telling people your story. Women crave the strength in others to aspire to. If I was still sad and insecure about my lack of hair, then this wouldn’t work, I couldn’t put myself out there to help other women. I needed to feel beautiful within and confident with how I look to be able to inspire other women to feel confident in how they look. Hair loss doesn’t need to define you, it just one tiny part of who you are.
I am proud to have launched The Beautiful Hair Boutique, I am excited to help women feel feminine and beautiful again and I am excited and CONFIDENT about what lies ahead of me.

For first time wig wearers the process of purchasing a wig can seem daunting, but the good news is it doesn't need to be. This is why at The Beautiful Hair Boutique we have come up with a simple step by step process so we can help you find the perfect hair.
Here is our our step by step process to find you the perfect hair!
The 5 Step Process
At The Beautiful Hair Boutique, our qualified wig consultants this step by step process to ensure we find you hair that is perfectly suited to you! We understand your wig requirements need to be as unique as you, so they feel secure, natural and ensure you feel confident and beautiful when you step out the door.

Step 1 - Selecting your Human Hair Type
We pride ourselves in selling only the finest quality, ethically sourced human hair.
At The Beautiful Hair Boutique we offer two grades of stunning human hair and we pride ourselves in stocking ONLY the very finest quality human hair wigs,
and all of our wigs are made ONLY from ethically sourced human hair.
What is Virgin European Hair?
Virgin European hair is the highest quality, most beautifully soft hair available on the market. Why? Because it has never been processed or coloured, it has been left in its natural colour and texture. This hair is soft and fine and will move like your real hair. At the Beautiful Hair Boutique we pride ourselves in offering you the absolute best hair available in the world, we do this through our range of Virgin European wigs, topettes and other hair pieces.
What is Remy Human Hair?
Remy human hair will often be a blend of European and Mongolian hair and may also come from mixed donors. Remy human hair is naturally dark in colour and as such needs to be bleached and dyed to create an assortment of colors to match Caucasian hair colors. Our Processed Remy human hair wigs are at more affordable price point for those who would like human hair but cannot afford the price tag of our Virgin European Hair. At the Beautiful Hair Boutique we source the very best quality and ethically sourced Remy human hair for our wigs and hairpieces.
How does Virgin European Hair differ from Remy Human Hair?
Virgin European hair is the most beautiful hair available and primarily differs from processed Remy human hair as it is naturally fine and soft in texture, as opposed to remi hair which can be slightly more coarse. 100% Virgin European hair has never been put through any chemicals or conditioners. However, with all of our Human Hair wigs the cuticles are all left intact making all the hair aligned in one direction, and will also mean less tangling with the hair on the wig.
Virgin hair will also retain its stunning shine and soft texture wash after wash.

Step 2 - Selecting your Hair Colour
Our Human Hair Wigs are available in a huge range of gorgeous hair colours.
Our Virgin European Hair colours are 100% natural and have been cut directly from the donor’s ponytail. Our Processed Remy Human Hair has been coloured and coated to reach the desired colour.

Step 3 - Selecting your Wig Cap
Not everyone’s head is the same size, and not everyone has the same degree of hair loss so it is important to take the time to select the right type of wig cap for you, to ensure the wig is secure and comfortable on your head. All of our wig caps are adjustable and can be tightened if necessary. We recommend you go with a cap size that is slightly on the tighter side to allow room for it to stretch, as your body heat will naturally allow the cap to expand.
The Standard Close Wefted Cap
Suitable for women with women and children with Alopecia or wearing a wig as a result of cancer. This wig cap has a snug fit, can be adjusted and is lightweight. The cap has a natural skin top, that beautifully resembles your natural scalp which also allows for a multi-directional part so you can style this wig completely to suit you. This cap can come with or without, pins and clips to be secured to hair underneath if this is on the scalp.
From the crown of the head to the nape, there is a single piece of stretch material with wefts sewn horizontally across from ear to ear. This cap has a snugger fit and because the single piece of material is completely closed to the head, it prevents hair from the head from coming through.
The Silicone - Gripper Cap
Suitable for women with women and children with complete hair loss, such as Alopecia Totalis or Alopecia Universalis as the wig has strips of silicone which grip to the scalp.
The silicone gripper wig is also suitable for those who have lost all the hair on their scalp as a result of cancer. This wig cap has a very snug fit, can be adjusted. The cap has a natural skin top, that beautifully resembles your natural scalp which also allows for a multi-directional part so you can style this wig completely to suit you. The silicone gripper wig is suitable for those with an active lifestyle as it can be worn exercising, swimming, etc
The Open Wefted Cap
Suitable for those with partial hair loss or people looking for a wig that has greater ventilation.
The open wefted wig cap has a natural skin top, that beautifully resembles your natural scalp which also allows for a multi-directional part so you can style this wig completely to suit you. From the crown to the nape, there are many wefts (rows of hair) sewn horizontally across from ear to ear. The area between each weft is open so the cap does not feel as tight on the head. When pinning a wig up, the open wefts allow the pins to go through the cap and be fastened to the hair growing from the head, which assures a firmer hold. The open wefts also allow more ventilation to the scalp. This is also known as an open wig cap.
100% Hand Tied Lace Caps
Suitable for women who experience scalp sensitivity and those looking for a 100% lace hand made wig.
Hand-Tied caps are made with each individual hair strand being hand-knotted on the cap. The hand tied lace wig cap provides a comfortable fit. The lace caps also allow for a natural feel as the hair appears to grow naturally from your scalp. Hand tied caps are very delicate and less durable than a closed wefted option and may require more maintenance. The hand tied cap may also stretch more easily and may require alterations over time.
Step 3 - Selecting your Hairline
One of the biggest concerns women have when it comes to wearing a wig, is how natural will the hair line look, which is why we have a range of hair line options to suit different looks. The lace front has received the most media attention recently as celebrities in the US have taken to wearing lace front wigs. Although this isn’t always suitable for everyone, as the lace is very delicate and doesn’t tend to last as long.
To view our Hair Line Options - click here
Step 4 - Selecting your Hair Length
The up side to wearing a wig is you don’t have to wait years for your hair to grow, and overnight you can have the luscious long locks you have always desired OR you can recreate your look with a bob. The options are endless. All of our beautiful human hair wigs are customised to suit the length you desire, and you can enjoy hair as long as 30” long!

Step 5 - Selecting your Wig Cap Size
It is important for us to make sure our consultants correctly fit the cap so it is snug on your head. Our flagship Sydney salon has a range of wig sizes in stock, and we also have wig sizing caps to ensure you get the correct size. If you are unable to make it into the salon, you can measure your own head using our detailed sizing instructions.
How do I get my Human Hair Wig cut and styled once it arrives?
Once your perfect combination has arrived, we will book you in for a cut and style consultation with our team of highly experienced human hair wig hair stylists. Our stylists have been working with wigs for over a decade and take the time to sit with you to understand exactly how you would like your wig styled so it is cut in to suit your face.
If you are unable to make it to Sydney, we still have you covered! Did you know?
What are the stages of hair loss in females? Without any treatment female pattern hair loss can progress from a widening part to overall hair thinning. Female pattern hair loss is a progressive condition which means many women will continue to lose their hair, however unlike men many women do not lose all their hair. Treatment can deliver the best results when started at the first signs of hair loss.
Image above: Ludwig's pattern of hair loss in females.
Stage 1 - Minimal hair loss which can be camouflaged by hair styling techniques
Stage 2 - Characterised by a decrease in volume and widening of the middle part
Stage 3 - Overall thinning on the scalp, which can lead to a see through look on the head
In a brusque interview London Trichologist Dr Philip Kingley tells Marie Claire “Like a peacock's brilliant feathers, hair is a secondary sexual characteristic. You don't need it to keep you either warm or cool, so its primary function is to increase attractiveness."
So where does this leave women with thinning hair?
Here are our 9 top tips to help you deal with thinning hair and go from flat to FABulous...
1. Reduce your stress.
I know it is easier said than done, but if you can take some time out, and just breathe, it could seriously help! Severe, chronic and even sudden stress can cause havoc on your body. This may lead to your weakened immune system attacking your precious hair follicles as a way of coping with your bodies stress. The good news is, once you reduce your stress levels, often (not always) your hair will start to grow back. So in the meantime, take up yoga, master meditation and try to remove yourself (as often as you can) from highly stressful situations.
2. Eat well and get moving
It's simple, our bodies thrive on good food and exercise. Not only does it nourish our insides, but exercise will also help to release that ever so important serotonin, to make you feel happier. Hair loss can be a vicious cycle, we lose our hair so we don’t feel great about ourselves, and when we are down in the dumps our body isn't loving life. So let’s focus on what we can control, and that is what we put in our bellies and how often we get moving. Even a light 30 min walk, 3-4 a week, will help clear the mind and get your serotonin pumping,
When it comes to what we put in, the hair gets off on good proteins, iron, zinc, and vitamin B12. Next time you visit the supermarket make sure you stock up on fish, leafy greens, lean meats and chicken, nuts and beans.
For more information on how to best eat for hair thinning and tailor your diet for specific autoimmune conditions, talk to a qualified dietician. I recommend the experts at www.thehealthclinic.com.au.
3. Add some volume to your thinning hair with a human Hair Topper
Hair Toppers are a great way to not only cover the areas on your head that may be experiencing hair loss, but they also add that fabulous volume to your thinning hair. Just a quick flip and clip and voila you have sudden volume.
Hair toppers come in a range of colours and bases that cover smaller to larger areas on the scalp.
Toppers, also known as Crown Extensions can be made from beautiful natural looking human hair, which can be cut, styled and even coloured to blend in with your natural thinning hair. We recommend a high quality human hair, and a 100% Virgin European Hair topper if you wish to colour the hair to blend in with your natural hair. At The BHB we have a unique collection of hair toppers for women experiencing hair loss, and take pride in taking the time to match you up with the perfect piece.

4. Leave the clips, hot iron tools and curlers behind
Reduce the use of hair curlers, straighteners or clip in hair extensions all of which have a tendency to add extra strain to your already fragile hair. When you hair is thinning and can easily snap it is essential you give it extra TLC and avoid any extra external pressures.
5. Try switching to wig to take the pressure off your thinning hair (or to cover up greater hair loss)
Hollywood actress Keira Knightley in a recent interview confesses “I have dyed my hair virtually every color imaginable for different films. It got so bad that my hair literally began to fall out of my head! So for the past five years I’ve used wigs, which is the greatest thing that’s ever happened to my hair,” she told InStyle UK.
Knightley has worn a range of stunning human hair lace front wigs. The lace front hair line gives the illusion that the hair is coming out of the scalp. Lace front wigs are also a go to for makeup artists as the lace can be further blended to the scalp with makeup to give an even more natural looking hairline.
Wigs are becoming increasingly popular for women experiencing hair thinning, as they can sit on top of your natural hair and blend in beautifully. For the most natural look, go for a human hair wig.

7. Minoxoldil
Minoxidil is one of the most commonly sold products to help fight hair loss, and is used to help women who are suffering from gradually thinning hair or larger areas of hair loss on the top of the scalp. You may recognise it by its more popular name, Rogaine. The 5% strength, Topical Minoxidil solution, is safe for women, and does not require a prescription. Typically when applied to the scalp twice a day, 40% of individuals (both men and women) will see new hair growth. Hair growth can tend to appear within 2-8 weeks on the patches and areas where Minoxodil has been applied.
8. Cortisone Shots
This treatment is not for the faint hearted. Cortisone shots are know to be painful, so I wouldn’t recommend rushing into this option until you are fully informed or prepared to take on this treatment. Cortisone shots have had a solid success rate for women experiencing less than 50% hair loss . The shots work by injecting cortisone directly into the scalp, blocking the hormonal activity that induces hair thinning. For more information on Cortisone shots contact your local dermatologist.s
9. Be kind to yourself
When a woman loses her hair, she feels like a huge part of her identity and sexuality has gone with it. The good news is, these days there are so many options to help get your hair looking amazing again if you just show yourself a little extra love, trust me, your hair will thank you for it. Ask your partner, mum, brother, friend or anyone special to you, for a daily head massage!

The Beautiful Hair Boutique is the very first of it's kind to open it's doors in Sydney, Australia. Bursting with beautiful human hair wigs, hairpieces and quality haircare products this hidden gem is a must visit if you are suffering from any form of medical related hair loss such as alopecia, have lost your hair as a result of chemotherapy, have hair thinning or simply want to re-create your own loo with a wig. You won't regret it, trust me!
What makes The BHB different? All of the hairpieces they provide are made from the very best quality human hair. Believe it or not, there are so many types of human hair available (and made into wigs) it is easy to get confused and purchase a wig or hairpiece that isn't the cream of the crop. At The BHB, they literally only have the best! And they guarantee it.
There are two grades of human hair available to purchase at their flagship salon located in Mosman, Sydney. The entry level wigs and hair pieces are made from a premium processed hair or you can go for the very very best hair available which is the 100% Virgin European Hair. The Europeans are known for their premium products and with hair this is absolutely no different.
Did you know there are certain regions in Europe that produce the finest most amazing hair? Well this is where the hair is sourced to make these masterpieces.
How do you know you are getting virgin hair? It may not be visible to the naked eye, but a professional hair dresser will absolutely be able to tell the difference and The BHB encourage this. In fact, they ask senior stylists all the time to make sure they deliver what is promised.
We asked The BHB owner about the hair "there are times when the hair just isn't up to standard, and we just straight up reject it. If I wouldn't be happy wearing it, then I refuse to sell it".
Purchasing a wig or hairpiece is a very personal thing, so with this should come a very personal experience. The trained hair specialists at the salon will help you every step of the way, from deciding which colour you would like to which base and hairline is right for you.
Whilst typical wig stores may nudge you into using their in-house stylists, the team at The Beautiful Hair Boutique are happy to work with your own hairdresser to make sure your piece is cut and coloured perfectly to suit you. They also work with a network of hairdressers nationwide, and have their own in-house senior stylist and colour technician as wig cutting and colouring has to be done right the first time. There is no going back!
"Ladies feel a sense of comfort and ease when they walk through our doors, and we want this journey to feel safe all the way, as this can be very very scary for so many of our clients".
The girls in there pride themselves on having a first class environment and this was very apparent when I popped in myself. From the burning scented candles, beautiful warm lighting to their cosy private showroom and they even have a selection of amazing tea's to make sure you soak up the experience.
"Our boutique is high end, and we want the customer to enjoy this experience. It isn't just about purchasing a wig, we aim to help women re-build their confidence and feel special with a piece that has been custom put together just for them".

As a child hair loss is something extremely difficult to come to terms with. Just as you are establishing who you are, a little part of you is taken away. Just like that, with no real reason. Having lost my hair at age 7, I know from experience what it is like to wear a wig as a young kid and teenager and have come up with a 4 step children's wigs checklist to help your child feel as secure as they can in their wig.
1. Hair Quality - making sure the hair is beautiful and natural looking should be top of the list. Human hair wigs will give your child flowing, natural hair that is as close as possible to their natural hair. If your child has fine hair, you do not want to move them into a harsh synthetic hair wig.
2. Security - as a kid we spend our times running around, jumping in and out of the swimming pool, playing sport, doing cartwheels and so much more that we need to make sure the wig will stay on securely. It is paramount. We recommend if your child suffers from complete hair loss such as Alopecia Totalis or Alopecia Universalis that you select a wig that has a silicone or gripper base. The silicone will grip to the scalp to ensure it is on nice and tight. If your child has some hair, then make sure you choose a children's wig that can be adjusted to secure the wig onto the head. For additional security you can use a wig grip and/or use the wig clips to secure to any existing natural hair.
3. Hairline - the quality of the hair line will determine how natural looking the wig will appear. Make sure you shop around for the best hair lines.
4. Lightweight - in Australia we live in a warm climate and want to make sure our kids don't get too hot in their wigs. A lightweight and breezy wig will help them to stay cool during the warmer months.
Do you need help with a Children's wig? At The Beautiful Hair Boutique we have a beautiful collection of "princess" wigs for girls. Available in 3 lengths and a range of gorgeous colours, these have been handpicked to make sure they tick off all of the above. We give them our Kids wigs tick of approval.
